Christmas Kid Craft – Birch Log Snowman
It’s so much fun to make some Christmas crafts with the grandkids! Make a Christmas kid craft – Birch log Snowman.
This idea came to me when I was trying to clean up a bunch of wonderful white birch branches from a recent tree trimming. Yes, my ‘wheels’ are always turning! I’m sharing this tutorial for a fun Christmas Craft. Make some ornaments or little Christmas gifts with the kiddos.
I still love the Rustic Gnomes I made a few years ago! They were also made of birch logs and are still great! My Christmas decor is very much nature inspired and has that rustic touch since my visual senses can not handle an explosion of too much colour!
Nature’s Inspiration:
Being outside in the fresh air brings me much joy! It is peaceful and gives me so much… Nature gives me some of the most simple supplies
When I was out there cutting my wood I got a typical visitor! These wild turkeys are quite common lately! They waddle by quite often and I cross my fingers that the coyotes do not get them! My grandson delights when he hears their gobble-gobble sounds!
Just me & my Chainsaw!
Yup, I like my chainsaw! There’s just something about being able to cut wood so easily! This Milwaukee 18V Chainsaw was just perfect for these smaller branches compared to my carving chainsaw. Yes, I have my own carving chainsaw! (more on that soon, I promise)
It is best to do this without the kiddies around though. ‘So much better than using a saw!
When I look at a stack of branches and logs I have all kinds of ideas, not to mention the wonderful colour palette I see there! Whether a snowman, or Reindeer, there are many options to use birch branches and logs for holiday decoration.
The basic Snowman Design:
To keep these simple I just cut some little stumps and clipped some thinner tree branches for arms. To make this as easy as possible I planned most of the parts before involving the youngster.
The arms will attach much easier of there are some little holes drilled for them.
Grab an old sweatshirt, scraps, or even some felt squares to make the scarf and hat. The hat simple cone hat can be sewn or even just glued. Check the fit to the top of the little log.
Making Snowman’s Nose:
To keep the snowman’s nose less pointy I opted to just roll a triangle of orange felt and glue it. Once dry, the they are easy to cut.
The Coal eyes and mouth pieces were quite easy to pop out with simple hole-punch from a sheet of black craft foam.
The key to crafting with kids is to have things ready. Little hats scarves to wrap around the neck, black ‘coal’ eyes and mouth, buttons, and carrot noses. If their task is super simple they will be so proud and not feel overwhelmed.
How much fun it is to squirt some basic PVA glue and stick things on! Kids work well with glue and its an easy clean-up.
Placing the little black eyes and mouth pieces takes a bit of dexterity but they learn so much from this DIY. Help them tie a scarf around the neck of each snowman.
Little shirt buttons attach easily as well.
Seeing the concentration when the little ones are creating is amazing! I have very distinct memories of the crafts I did when I was very little and I think that it had a big part of starting my career as an artist and illustrator. Those feelings of accomplishment are priceless!
This fun kid’s craft can be used as little gifts for teachers and friends. If you attach some ribbon they can also be some ornaments for the Christmas Tree.
Since these are made with nature’s elements they are quite acceptable to be quite rustic, no perfection is expected here. How sweet are these!?
Make a bunch while you are at it… Short and ‘stumpy’ or tall and skinny, use up some of those scraps for scarves and hats. The best part; someday the ‘little one’will remember the fun craft that you made together. These little snowman fellows will be cherished.
Slow down a bit during the Christmas season, take in the opportunity to make an impression with the little ones with this cute idea. Those are the memories you can not buy… Enjoy this Christmas craft birch snowman.
So cute! My grands. (and me) would love this! Great idea!
Yes, I am sure! Much better than the toilet paper roll crafts!
Ahhhhh what lucky grand children! BRAVO again.
Wishing you and your loved ones Happy Holidays and a healthy New Year.
