Denim UpCycle; Jean Jacket & Sweater Knit Combo

Whether you want to add warmth, texture, or a boho-chic vibe, this project is simple and fun. Here’s my denim upcycle; Jean Jacket & Sweater Knit Blanket Combo

UpCycling a jean jacket with a sweater knit combo is a fantastic way to create a cozy, one-of-a-kind fashion piece.

Materials You’ll Need

  • An old jean jacket (any size or style)
  • A knit blanket (chunky knits, cable knits, or textured knits work best) Thrift stores are quite full right now…
  • Fabric scissors or rotary cutter
  • Sewing machine (or heavy-duty needle for hand-sewing)
  • Pins or clips
  • Thread in a matching or contrasting colour

Step 1: Choose Your Design

Decide how much of your old denim jacket you want to replace with the knit blanket. I decided to keep it simple and only insert the knit into the front and back ‘window panes’. Some other stylish options include:
Back panel only – A statement piece without bulk.
Sleeves – Adds warmth and a cozy sweater feel. (sleeve is more difficult than flat sections)
Collar & cuffs – A subtle yet stylish upgrade but more difficult to fit.
Patchwork style – Mix different knit pieces for a trendy, eclectic look.

The small baby blanket I found when thrifting had a scallop edging that would make a cute finish inside front. I believe it is a washable wool in a similar weight to Sayelle.

The yarn in this blanket is not that bulky but thick enough to be able to be caught by the stitching when sewn. When cutting/sewing a knitted item it is key that the stitches catch the yarn in multiple places to prevent unravelling. If need be, just sew the seam multiples times.

Step 2: Place the Knit Blanket

  1. Lay the knit blanket flat and smooth out any wrinkles.
  2. Place the jean jacket on top, positioning it to match your design idea.
  3. Pin the jacket and turn over to check & adjust pinning.
  4. Cut the knit fabric if too much excess or leave in place until after sewn.

Tip: If your knit fabric frays easily, you can apply fabric glue or use a zigzag stitch around the edges before sewing.

Step 3: Attach the Knit Fabric to the Jacket

For Sewing:

  1. Pin or clip the knit fabric onto the jean jacket.
  2. Use a straight stitch or zigzag stitch to attach the knit piece. A walking foot on a sewing machine can help prevent stretching but mine worked fine without. Sew around all panel shapes next to double stitch lines. If space is tight you can also use a zipper foot to get closer to parts like the buttons.
  3. Sew slowly and evenly, adjusting the fabric as needed to prevent puckering. Check underneath to make sure edges of blanket are sewn. This helps ensure the knit combo is secure.

The finished edges were kept at front and bottom which makes a clean edge. Use a fine close stitch (perhaps sew twice) to make sure that yarn is securely sewn.

When deciding on the colour for your diy denim jacket choose one that blends well with the denim blue colour. For added security you can sew a couple lines of stitching close to each other.

Step 4: Trim Sweater Knit

  1. Carefully cut away the extra knit fabric.
  2. Repeat for back panels in same as front sides.
  3. Sew back panel slowly and evenly, adjusting the fabric as needed to prevent puckering. Check underneath to make sure edges of blanket are sewn.

Step 5: Cut out Panels

  1. Without cutting into knit cut denim panels carefully between double stitch lines.
  2. Leave about 1cm or 1/4″ excess denim to allow fringing.
  3. This combo design works great! Snip the denim exposed seams every inch or so to allow easier fringing.

The way denim naturally fringes gives this jacket so much charm. You can pull the threads or wash to expedite the process.

Depending on the choices of colour combinations can make quiet the fashion statement.

The light blue thread stitchin is very well hidden in the denim colour.

More Comfort!

The knit brings such softness to the denim and also can make the fit better since it allows some stretch. Perhaps you choose to only replace the sleeves with parts from an afghan quit = sweater sleeves!

Enjoy your cozy upcycled jacket!

This project is a great way to give new life to old clothes and add a unique, handmade touch to your winter wardrobe.

I can imagine how amazing a Granny square blanket would make a great Boho jean jacket sweater knit combo with lots of detail!

Tips & Variations for your Jean Jacket & Sweater Knit Combo:

  • Choose a contrasting blanket: For a bold look, select a blanket with a contrasting colour or pattern.
  • Add decorative touches: Embellish the jacket with patches, embroidery, or faux fur trim.
  • Use a fleece blanket: For extra warmth, use a fleece blanket instead of a knit one. The fleece can transform your jacket into a cozy statement!

Whether you choose contrast for the knit or not will make a strong statement or subtle design.

The beauty of knit is the comfort and also the added stretch it can give the fit. What do you think? I’m looking for some Granny Square blanket… Woohoo!

Happy making! I hope I’ve given you inspiration to do some upcycling and getting creative! Maybe you will craft you own Jean Jacket & Sweater Knit Combo! Please share if you do!
