What would You like on your Purse?

Can you help me? I have a Question… Over the last year I have been tossing an idea around in my mind. (Actually I toss a lot around in there but that’s another story…)

I am going to Up-cycle some beautiful purses and bags. They are quality brands that I have collected and restored.

My dream is to provide another life for these bags by painting designs on the. I hope they will be loved again and perhaps be even more cherished as art pieces. The illustrator/artist in me has been yearning to do a bit more painting lately. That spurred this idea; ‘Repurposed-Repursed‘.

RePurposed – RePursed:

Each one will be a one-of-a-kind art piece. I’ve done this often for my loved ones, but I knew what would make them smile (or sometimes cry)

Now my question is; what would you just love to see on your bag? This is a question of ‘Surface Design’, trends and images that are always well received.

Here’s some of what I’ve painted already to give you an idea of the possibilities;

Pets and Flowers are always sentimental but I want to be more unique.

Please comment below and let me know. I would really appreciate your feedback, who knows, maybe I’ll paint your idea!

I am hoping to pop them into my Etsy store or a local Artist Co-op Store.

  1. I would want words on mine…… LOVE, HOPE, WOMEN ROCK!, TRUTH, JUSTICE, PEACE, EQUALITY, HONESTY, FREEDOM……

    Just my thoughts!

    Thanks Barb!

    1. Oh, I can see those in bold fonts and colours! Yes!!! (memories of Typography class and calligraphy are coming back to me!) I still have my Big handbook.

  2. Since you want something different than what you’ve already done, how about a landscape? Of course, a lot of people like mountains, and others like the ocean.
Plus, they are designs like the Greek fret. Or printing something on there from objects.
Did you do fantastic work so obviously anything you choose to do will be wonderful!

    1. It sold very quickly! I do have a special love of mushrooms, traipsing around the forest with my father looking for edible ones! ‘A great way of appreciating nature!

  3. Hi Barb!
If you want to try something very outside your usual, I think colorful tattoo designs would look great on black leather bags. Janice’s suggestion of words had me visualizing the words in tattoo style.

    1. I’m not too familiar with Tattoo designs, I’ll have a look. I didn’t know it is a style. I do have an appreciation for Typography though as we were taught that quite extensively back in the days before computers! (art college) It’s not easy to hand render Baskerville Bold! I love this idea!

  4. Hello Barb, I think that re purposing old bags by painting art on them is a great idea. Personally, I suggest painting customers pets. I think a lot of people would enjoy having you paint their beloved animal (from a customer supplied photo), on a purse, bag or backpack.

Best of luck and thank for all your posts and creative ideas!

  5. Hey Barb! I’ve watched videos where an artist makes a simple silhouette of a baby or child’s face, and, without breaking the line of color, they blend in either the child’s name or flower/leaves. The end result is very simple but very beautiful. With your creativity, I’m thinking you could use this idea, but give it your own special twist. You’ll find some unique way to embellish it or improve the and result. Plus, it could be personalized to any person that sends you a photo of their baby. (You could even apply the technique to photos of pets, or heck – even a couples first starter home!) That might be cool to have on a purse.

    1. Oh, I think I know what you mean. That sounds interesting, almost like the idea of free motion sewing where you keep on the same line… Trying to steer my brain away from realism is a challenge… I need to do some doodling ❤️

  6. Hi Barb
I l9ve the idea of painting on purses. I would like a flowing stream of blue and green off to one side. But not on MK or COACH. 😊 they have their own beauty as original designed.

  7. Hello, I love them all. I’ve found that if you stick with what you enjoy painting you can always come out well. That being said I paint on anything lol. I paint beautiful things and yet I find people want or like the unusual things best. . I sell lots of beautiful dot ( pointillism) paintings and yet I sell more rattlesnake door stop rock than I ever would have imagined. Do what you like and see what sells. Good luck and just enjoy creating Alie Ackerson

    1. Oh yes, you are right! It’s funny how I’ve changed my thoughts since starting this venture. I was worried that what I really like is odd to others. But truly, the odd things seem to have more meaning. Good for you! I love hearing that!

  8. Using your recommendations, I refurbished my cowhide purse by painting over the markings after the “fur” wore off. Painted, it still looks convincingly like hide and I get a lot of compliments about it.
A western look is very popular

  9. I really like the one with leaf and the design on MK bag.
And I see those boots or crocs! I love everything you do.
